Support for Multiple Classes of Traffic in Multicomputer Routers

چکیده
Emerging parallel real-time and multimedia applications broaden the range of performance requirements imposed on the inter-connection network. This communication typically consists of a mixture of diierent traac classes, where guaranteed packets require bounds on latency or throughput while good average performance suuces for the best-eeort traac. This paper investigates how multicomputer routers can capitalize on low-latency routing and switching techniques for best-eeort traac while still supporting guaranteed communication. Through simulation experiments, we show that certain architectural features are best-suited to particular performance requirements. Based on these results , the paper proposes and evaluates a router architecture that tailors low-level routing, switching, and ow-control policies to the unique needs of best-eeort and guaranteed traac. Careful selection of these policies , coupled with ne-grain arbitration between the classes, allows the guaranteed and best-eeort packets to share network bandwidth without sacriicing the performance of either class.

Performance Analysis of a Minimal Adaptive Router
Two classes of adaptive routers, minimal and non-minimal, are emerging as possible replacements for the oblivious routers used in current multicomputer networks. In this paper, we compare the simulated performance of three routers, an oblivious, a minimal, and a non-minimal adaptive router, in a twodimensional packet switching torus network. The non-minimal adaptive router is shown to give the ...
متن کاملDesign of a Low-Latency Router Based on Virtual Output Queuing and Bypass Channels for Wireless Network-on-Chip
Wireless network-on-chip (WiNoC) is considered as a novel approach for designing future multi-core systems. In WiNoCs, wireless routers (WRs) utilize high-bandwidth wireless links to reduce the transmission delay between the long distance nodes. When the network traffic loads increase, a large number of packets will be sent into the wired and wireless links and can...
متن کاملAdvanced operations research techniques for multi-constraint QoS routing in internet
Internet Traffic has grown exponentially over last few years due to provision of multiple class services through Internet backbone. With the explosive use of Internet, contemporary Internet routers are susceptible to overloads and their services deteriorate drastically and often cause denial of services. In this paper, an analysis is made how forecasting technique, routing algorithm and Genetic...
متن کاملTraffic-Driven Implicit Buffer Management (Extended Version)
Different network applications have different service preferences regarding packet delay and buffering. Delay management requires scheduling support at routers, which traditionally also requires some form of traffic specification and admission control. In contrast, this paper studies the problem of guaranteeing queueing delay bounds for multiple service classes without traffic contracts and wit...
متن کاملApplying Reinforcement Learning to Packet Scheduling in Routers
An important problem for the Internet is how to provide a guaranteed quality of service to users, in contrast to the current “best-effort” service. A key aspect of this problem is how routers should share network capacity between different classes of traffic. This decision needs to be made for each incoming packet, and is known as the packet scheduling problem. A major challenge in packet sched...
